31 Spooky movies I survived this October

  1. Sleepy Hollow - Starting of my 31 days of Spooky Movies with Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Atmosphere is great! The story is a bit contrived but Burton still creates great spooky visuals, that are worth admiring. I do think the cartoon short is better.

  2. Coco - Not the spookiest movie but with Dia de Los Muertos, it fits my 31 days of spooky movies. The music is fantastic! I also love the creativity in how they make this dim existence into a festive climate especially with the alebrijes! The movie holds such vibrant colors that makes the most of its settings for sure. The idea of making an impact while your alive so that one can hold on to their existence in passing is somewhat inspirational.  Only nitpick is how it gets a little typical with the ending of the antagonist defeat but I guess I can't get too deep into that without spoilers.

  3. Clockwork Orange - Very disturbing film. A philosophical discussion of who deserves to lose their right of choice. McDowell plays a despicable creature who isn't worthy of redemption but that creates the question; does Alex deserve the mental torture? A lot horrifyingly unforgettable visuals get ingrained in one's brain due to this film like Alex being forced to watch the condition videos for hours on end and the multiple individuals they attack for no distinct reason. Kubrick is a legend with this uncomfortable material.

  4. Hostel - Haven't seen this one in a long time. My uncle took me to see this by my request when it was in theater. At that point, I've seen plenty of gory movies but not much sex/nudity. My uncle was very appalled for my sake when he saw how much nudity the movie had. Guess gore is more acceptable than sex because it's more fantasy while sex is more something we're likely to deal with. I remember liking the movie. At the time I compared it to Saw due to the gore. Big difference is Saw had a lot more substance but that faded away as the sequels went on; at least I made it to the 3rd Saw. Didn't even make it to the 2nd Hostel, which I will now do soon. Before I saw Hostel, I had no idea what a hostel was. So, it didn't make me necessarily paranoid of hostels just paranoid of the idea of traveling alone. Can't say that stopped me though. Hostel presents one of those situations, where it's super obvious that everyone is trying to screw the protagonist over but they have no choice then to trust them due to the protagonist being the out of their element majorly. I've only traveled to a foreign country once (I want to do it more), but no way would I go to a hostel. This is not cause what the movie presents but due to one being so vulnerable in so many other ways like rooming with strangers especially when I find Air BnBs to be such a great option. The movie itself doesn't hold much rewatchability goes. Eli Roth does a good crafting the movie but nothing much more to admire. The movie escalates at a good pace setting the audience in this world of despair and paranoia. The gore is done well with grounded practical effects. I remember when I was younger, I was making a lot of odd cultural assumptions about Germans and Japanese in the film. Even though it was in Amsterdam, there were nazis becoming active and how Japanese can't handle any faults, so they must kill themselves. The kid gang is an odd wrench but they don't change the tone of the movie much. Maybe the opposite. Due to all the elements being so alien, the kid gangs even makes it scarier cause Americans aren't used to kids running around in gangs; at least that young.

I want to make note of the order of the victims. I would think the naive one would be the one who is saved due to them being right about being cautious. Which is fine due to my expectations being reversed. The most notable scene is Rick Hoffman's scene, where he gives the viewers a perspective of the torturers. Beforehand, these were all monsters and now he gives a point of view which could be seen as possible for a human being to have. The ending where the three guides get runover is satisfying but a little goofy when the villains have no qualms for running over civilians but will stop, so the kids can set up a trap. Recommend a viewing for once and awhile but don't set your standards high. Perfect for an annual spooky films series.

  5. Hostel 2 - Why even follow the characters from the first one if you're going to kill them off right away? The ol' Alien 3 kind of sequel; can't afford the actors so you kill them off immediately. Not sure how a studio can't afford Jay Hernandez.

Same hostel(location), same Pulp Fiction, same manager, different lighting...odd; this sequel was recommended by a friend so hopefully this one offers something different. The lighting in Hoste 2 really bothers me. Why'd the timid guy even agree to this? I don't understand his character. Is he so beta to get 'talked' into this? Hope there's a twist with him. Why would the hostel folks give him a saw with the cord too short when they know where it has to reach? Like the chair is always in the same some. How inconvenient. Wah Wah.  Ooh, I guess there may be a twist the beta torturer. Good was getting bored with how black and white the main protagonists were.

Why did I watch Hostel 2? Wasn't a good story, wasn't any entertaining gore, and I don't mind the women empowerment deal but it literally took up 5 minutes of the film and I think it was supposed to be the theme of the whole movie. What a waste.

  6. Silent Hill

In Defense Of 'Silent Hill' (2006) - Bloody Disgusting

     - Silent Hill is one of my spooky favorite flicks and I don't even play the video games. Great atmosphere, effects, and it's fun trying to figure the hidden analogies.  Also, Pyramid Head is a great monster for everyone to run from. I know I'd be scared if I saw him in real life.  Most definitely recommend.

  7. Audition

    ImageImage#horroredit from locally hated

     - Been awhile since I've watched this. Makes one go over some messed up morals in their brain. Producer was definitely out of line using his job like that but gal has no business doing what she's just cause of her past.  The movie does a great job of getting it's viewers lost in this reality, where can't put their finger on the plot. Not sure that'll work with most. Not the best horror film but a still a very intriguing story with some good nightmare fuel that won't leave one's brain easily.

  8. Chopping mall - Great blast from the 80s.  It's as if Chopping Mall knew it would be a time capsule for the 80s from the mall to the 'futuristic' clothes to the clothes to the attitudes. Some neat deaths but somewhat of a boring affair for a movie about killer robots.  There is a head explosion that's worth seeing. Funny to see how the mall was shown to be the aspiration of the future while their 'modern' technology was the killer. A little bit ironic I guess. Fun slasher but may have been better if it was cut down to half the time.

  9. Hocus Pocus - A children's classic that I didn't watch as a child. Just enjoy how much fun the three witches were having despite being so naive to everything. Watching it I did like the tidbit I caught, where the fountain they use is the same one as the one in the Friend's opening song. I don't have much interest in the sequel but I'm sure it will be a nice little bonus for Disney + fans. Thought the design of the zombie chasing the kids was pretty neat especially since there was a point to having his lips sewn tight. Nice little twist towards the end when he gets the knife. Certainly recommend but not really one of my favorites like Monster Squad.

  10. Nosferatu -

    ImageImagehttps://64.media.tumblr.com/46ac624ac4e147a6b4661ea1d7a55b59/4af8cfd530bc72ba-0b/s640x960/696cb185d3e8f1fb4fa1825cc1cce31315c6b997.png

This was a first time viewing, thanks to a friends help getting access to Amazon Prime. Really interesting take on the reasoning for the victims being a part of a infectious pandemic, probably stemming from the Spanish Flu they were just dealing with. Some of course, momentous visuals that many following horror movies stemmed their ideas from. Love how they went all out for the Dracula design while the characters treat him as if he's the romantic suave Dracula, we see in future films like Bela Legosi's portrayal of Dracula.  This is a must watch! May be best to watch with others as a silent viewing demands special focus.

  11. 9 -

Movie review: Tim Burton's '9' | The musings of a busy mind

9 wasn't bad but I didn't get the point of the story. The means the characters were taken was scarier than most horror movies although I wouldn't label this as a horror film. Enoyed the style and the art but once enough of that is admired, I figured I'm not that invested in the story to keep invested.  Not sure kids would take it well if it was supposed to be a kids movie. Wouldn't recommend but still a perfect viewing for my 31 spooky movies for Halloween.

  12. 30 days of night - Perfect timing especially with the snow coming while I was watching the movie. Does anyone remember Josh Hartnet being a thing? He wasn't bad. Not sure why he faded away. The vampires were great in this. Almost coming off as black and white due to their pale skin with the blood contrast. Story wasn't amazing but I definitely enjoy the concept of these monsters biding their time for a town's timing of pure darkness, which they're quite used to. I was fond of the commodity in the town and how the characters had a strong contrast when the s hit the fan. Certainly recommend. Also I want to point out that I always think of the band Bleeding Through since their album The Truth looks just like 30 Days of Night Poster.

BTTRUTH.jpg30 Days of Night Movie Poster (#1 of 8) - IMP Awards

  13. Prodigy 2018 - eh. Crazy girl with super powers on low budget. Nothing really happened in the movie. The movie literally all takes place in one room. I don't mind subtle movies but this only had one thing to reveal and it was that the ginger girl loved her mom. Whoopideedo! Boring with okay actors; they were trying their best...maybe.

  14. Brooklyn vs Vampires - Basically if stranger things took place in NY.  Not as sterotypical or schlocky as I was thinking with a vs title. Really not the best movie but harmless and fun nonetheless. Appreciated the themes of activism the movie was trying to push without but being forceful.  Not sure if I'd recommend it one really wouldn't regret this flick if they clicked play on Netflix.

  15. Face Your Fear - An anthology of shorts on Amazon Prime. Half of them were worth watching. I really liked the middle two 'Aftermath'(a dystopian story dealing with trust) and 'The Last time I saw Richard'(a flick handling the matters of mental disability).  Remember it being about an hour so I would certainly advocate my reader to check this out. Not sure it fit as part of my spooky film series but still worth a watch anyways.

  16. The Shed - An awkward vampire flick, where 30 year olds portrayed high schoolers throwback; somewhat. Not sure I'll watch again; super shlocky and silly but not in an entertaining way.  Called most plot point as it's taking from most high schoolers finding a monster movie.

  17. Hell House LLC - Fantastic premise, was super invested in the movie; silly ending though.

  18. Aterrados/Terrified - Love the creature designs, the characters were all nonsensical though.

  19. Nightmare before Christmas - Simply a classic; Boogy Woogy man is fantastic.

  20. Poltergeist - Another classic; forgot about the tree almost eating the boy; maybe I blocked it because it was messed up. Casting coach as the dad is so perfect. Not quite a badass but manly enough to stand up for his family when need to against the ghost. There's rumors that this flick was Tobe Hooper's in name only. I could definitely see were Hooper may have had his influence like the clown or the crazy but it wouldn't surprise me if Spielberg had more control with how the family characters are written and how they worked together to defeat the ghost. Actually a scene most horror movies can learn from is when the family is all crashing downstairs and the mom & Doctor have a moment to connect. It's really simple but in the same notes let's the audience know these characters are simple human beings and what's at stake. It's impressive how the most standout character of Tangina is in it for such a short time. Quite a performance Zelda Rubinstein puts on as you can't if she's their savior or the family downfall. Even after they leave, one can't be sure if set the family up or not.

  21. Bye Bye Man - Visuals are okay, nice to see the gal, who played Trinity. Just not a fan of movies where nothing makes a difference as far as what the characters do about the haunting. Lot of laughable moments but still not as funny as Alien Covenant. Literally the rules are flat out explained to the characters and they infuriatingly ignore them every chance they get. Audience is practically rooting for their death by the time they get to the end.

  22. Mayhem - Great concept; especially fun to watch during a pandemic. Have actually been admiring Steven Yeun's work post Walking Dead. No innocents here, which makes Steven's character even more relatable as we all want to go after our boss when we know for sure there's a conspiracy to ruin our career; despite the lack of proof.  Fun revenge on boss fantasy with a great violent twist. Most definitely recommend.

  23. Basket Case – I feel like there were restraints on the filmakers such as budget but these guys put care in the film. The actors were performers and wouldn't surprise me if they were from the theater. The special effects weren't immaculate but they definitely get the job done. Not a perfect movie but good to watch in a group setting maybe for some spoon tossing at the corniness.

  24. The Lodge - From the same filmmakers as the Goodnight Mommy, comes this psychological thriller. Probably my favorite of the newer viewing for my 31 spooky movies for Halloween. There were a couple quips about realism but I was invested in the psychological downfall of those trapped in the Lodge. The filmmaker definitely has mother issues, which works into the film. Reminded me of lighthouse a bit due to the isolation plot. Would recommend if you have a good suspension of disbelief.

  25. See No Evil -

Pretty garbage flick that essentially is ripping off the Friday the 13th background with a little bit of TCM tossed in there. Glen Jacobs makes a great monster naturally with his size and scary demeanor.  A huge issue is they give him the most basic wardrobe; nothing compared to those that he's in competition with as far as other slashers go. Although the fact, he takes the eyes from his victims is very unique and memorable. He may have been able to do something more with the eyes than just toss them in jars but aw well. I just hated the color scheme of this movie; where everything had some shade of potato sack brown. The gore can't even pop. What's the point of having a slasher movie then? I mostly just like seeing Kane in action. The victims were annoying but I guess that's the point, so the kills are more satisfying. Certainly worth watching for my 31 spooky films!

  26. See No Evil 2 - I mean the color scheme was better. The blood and gore certainly stood out amongst the background. Wish Kane didn't have to put on a mask. He looked more memorable with the hole in his face but the crew might not have had the budget to keep it the whole movie. Sad he didn't keep taking eyes. That was my favorite part of the mythos. Just thought I might as well watch it since I saw the first one.

The way they defeated Jacob Goodnight is much more satisfying in the 1st one. Also, the whole empty morgue deal didn't make sense. At least there can be an explanation for Kane & his mom creating a deadzone at the hotel. At the morgue it makes no sense besides the paranormal entities working to bring Goodnight alive also kept his victims trapped. If you don't mind the first one might as well watch this one. I at least liked this sequel more than the Hostel sequel.

  27. Mandy - Man, so tough to fully comprehend at all times what's happening in this film. Think that's a good thing. For me disorientation in movies can be super frustrating or super refreshing. Here I find it refreshing but I'm still not sure. Who was the fat guy that got pulled away when the freaks break into Cage's & Mandy's home? Love the whole initiation of this film is the psycho just seeing Mandy walking home. So nuts but I guess that's the idea that this cult leader gets what he wants at the smallest indication.

Just a hay fever when Mandy and Jeremiah's face becomes one. I feel like I could separate them easily beforehand but wasn't quite sure when it was happening. Also, when I heard Jeremiah's song, I found it so pretty and mesmerizing. I swear it was a real song beforehand. Still find it absolutely nuts how invested this nut is at a slight sighting. So funny how he becomes offended at Mandy's livelihood when she rejects him immediately at the mere sight of him.  Not quite the reciprocation, he was hoping for. The film emulates pure madness but also having seen so many others thrive on impulse alone, not the most shocking.

The 80s wallpaper(not sure the point but screams isolation, loneliness and desolation), the extreme amount of vodka, the tiger shirt(which I want) share so much rage and pain when Cage is originally crashing. All the vicious kills are so ludicrous, heinous and disturbing that Cage is delving out but feels so justified for how they did Mandy.

Not sure what to make of the ending of Mandy. I like the idea of the story taking place in another world but not sure what difference it makes as everything for the most part could've easily took place on earth. I don't mind something fresh to think about though.

  28. Summer of 84

    #Summer of 84 from MOVIEGIFS

Um, I thought this was a different movie, where the 4 friends are murdering each other. Definitely not that though. Not far into it, it's clear it's more akin to Disturbia/Clovehitch Killer type movie. Enjoying the movie so far. It's made well with likeable characters. I get that it's supposed to be a throwback, hence the name but it does not really stand out from the typical over their head teenager trying to find a killer movie. What stinks about these movies is it very likely has to be the individual, the teens are chasing the whole movie. That's who the whole story is built up for. Could be a random Joe Blow but it would be out of nowhere. Still could be fun movie but usually nothing more than background noise as far as plot goes.

Not sure how I feel about the ending of Summer of 84. It's different but not quite satisfying. The idea of fear does sink in of not know the future but stinks it's not conclusive. Wonder if they can or should do a sequel. A big plus is they actually got teenagers to play teenagers unlike the Shed. Not really one I'd recommend but one wouldn't regret it clicking play if they come across it.

  29. Shining - Definitely a classic. When I first watched I didn't enjoy so much since Jack seemed to turn so quickly without much of a transition but the more I watch it, the more I appreciate jt from filmaking techniques to the madness that ensure as things fall apart. Always loved Jack Nicholson's performance though. In hindsight, Dick should've definitely brought in the sheriffs when he went to the resort. I mean it wasn't just a hunch but the sheriffs lost contact with the hotel when Jack cutoff the radio so it would've been seen as a better safe than sorry scenario. Cool that they setup how well Danny knew the maze to trap his dad in towards the end. Clever

  30. Doctor Sleep - Surprisingly liked this movie more than I thought when I first saw it. It's no Shining but it certainly had me hooked when it did it's own thing. Of course it has to reference the Shining but the member berries got overwhelming toward the end. Also, seemed dumb Danny didn't have a better plan than return to the hotel. I mean Danny took almost all of Rose's friends by herself. Of course the unwieldy ghost would go after him. Guess he's lucky they attacked Rose first.

  31. Better Watch Out - A surprising flick I haven't heard of. Not sure to call it cheeky or black comedy but to best describe it's a home invasion movie that isn't typical. Should've watched something classical for my final flick but this will leave a lasting impact.

WWE needs to seasonal

By seasonal, I don't mean for it to have breaks just be broken down.

WWE needs to be held in seasons!

I wrote a passage years ago featuring a PPV schedule WWE could follow month to month. Not writing with the purpose of a stringent guideline to follow more of a fun means of making their themed ppvs streamline then seem like they're spinning a damn wheel each month. Wish I could find it but I posted in on the IGN blogs, which have become obsolete and no one from IGN cares to reply. What's gone is gone and here is a somewhat different take on it.

Reason I am writing is due to the fascination about holding kayfabe win-loss records and usually making rankings out of them. I understand the excitement of the idea. When I played the Smackdown game on playstation in the early 2000s, I loved forcing my favorite jobber wrestlers like X-Pac, D-Lo Brown, Matt Hardy and even Gangrel through rankings to the main event, where on TV they didn't belong. It was great seeing the rise. Even better(even though we know it's not) seeing wrestling treated with the logic of real sport as NFL. In wrestling, that just doesn't work. There's no divisions. This is the biggest paradigm that develops when attempting to include a ranking system with a win loss record. If WWE tries to introduce a new up and comer whose only defeating jobbers. Would they honestly deserve a shot against the world champion. Now the question, who deserve what, is an incredibly silly one to ask. Wrestling isn't a legitimate sport as we all know, so to fall for a trap of a win loss record being a consistent reason to earn said title is illegitimate. Not saying there need to be a 50-50 when it comes to a back and forth for a feud but that's pretty much what throws a wrench in this device. Let's say Edge finally overcomes Orton in their feud but since it's flat ranking system, Edge, who in a feud would have just as many losses as wins, wouldn't qualify for a World title shot over Miz, who is not doing anything and just being booked well. Not quite how credibility is developed in wrestling.

Throughout the whole year, there would be three seasons. The end of the seasons would be Summerslam, Survivor Series, and Wrestlemania. Each season they need to a reason to fight. The grand goal is the wrestlers with the best record would qualify for the playoffs as in other sports leagues. This won't always be the same format like in other professional leagues with a single elimination tournament. Pro Wrestling needs to have it's spontaneity and diversity in how the competition is presented. I certainly understand that. For Summerslam, the playoffs to qualify for a World title match would be the King of the Ring tournament. The tournament changes from 8-16 slots but the nice part about wrestlers qualifying with the win loss records is that the seeds will hold meaning. If a wrestler has the best record going into the tournament they will have an advantage because they'll be facing the wrestler with the worst record. Also, there is a story to tell outright about the last place being the underdog. Even if they're a well established wrestler, they may have run into a rut barely qualifying for the tournament.

The problem the ranked system has had in the past when attempted by multiple promotions is that they are forced to put a wrestler against the champion is not quite who creative wanted. With a season format until the so called playoffs, the win-loss records don't have to be used as qualifiers to face the champs. The World title program can be all storyline. With that being said, if a wrestler makes it to the playoffs, who creative isn't feeling is ready then they can be screwed or have a slip up in the playoffs. At least with this system, the wrestlers journey is established.

The standings can be used when ideas/programs are dry. Truly if they have to rely on the standings, then there should be no issue with the GM the show before the ppv showing the standings and crossing out names due to the wrestlers being booked. Folks would whine about wrestlers being overlooked in the standings. Well, they're not being overlooked, just busy. The seasonal standings can be used as a tool or a launching point rather than a staunch system to abide by. The biggest plus to having WrestleMania, Summerslam, and Survivor Series being the payoffs for these season is that if things are messy with the standings, they start fresh the following season. That's the issue when Smackdown or TNA tried committing to standings is that there was no endgame, so they just have ditch the gimmick, when running into trouble.

Now this isn't super important to making it work just a caveat but the playoffs for Survivor Series would be the Elimination Chamber. The top 6, in the standings, qualify for the chamber. Heck if WWE isn't happy with the top 6 then make qualifiers with the wrestlers with the best 12 records. There are many ways to mix this up. In the NFL playoffs, teams automatically pass the wild card round due to their strong standings. Kayfabe wise this won't be seen as random favoritism, when the reasoning is amount of wins by the wrestlers. We get it when John Cena, Randy Orton, or Roman Reigns automatically qualify for these big multiman matches but storyline wise, there's no explanation. So the expectation by WWE is the fans will fill in the blank for them. Simply lazy booking on most occasions.

How the playoffs are executed, for each season, don't truly matter. It's just a means to truly utilize a win-loss record system. For WrestleMania of course there's the Royal Rumble. Now if this was an honest sport, the way to apply the standings would be 1st place gets to come out as number 30, 2nd as #29 and so on until 30th place has to come out as #1. Now this certainly spoils the spontaneity that is the Royal Rumble. So, a simpler system would be to break the top 15 in groups of three and have the rest of the roster and surprises be tossed in as wildcards. For the three groups, I'd imagine the top five in the standings would come out in the last 20-30, the 6-10 in the standing would qualify to come out 10-20 group for the Rumble and so on. Really for the rest of the road to Wrestlemania, the battle would be for the next highest title. Can't say if that would be the Intercontinental title or the other brand's world title. Whatever title is 2nd best in the promotion, this is when they would truly make whoever earn it by being #1 in the standings by a deadline, which is best be the end of February; likely the last ppv before Mania.

One gimmick promotions loves to use to create to hype a new wrestler is an undefeated streak. Many wrestlers have came in hot as an iron by going several months undefeated like Ryback, Braun Strowman and CM Punk. Sadly enough once a wrestler loses, the only means of hyping a winning streaking is heavy coaxing from the commentating team or said wrestler. With a season restarting every few months, the fans will see visually who is hot during the new season without forced bragging by the wrestler or commentating team to established this.

How I would imagine these standings be shown weekly is by a scroll bar at the bottom of the screen throughout the show. Don't be too forceful about it. When the wrestler comes out right below their name have the W-L record shown below. If their record is part of a storyline, hype it not and if not just let it exist.

With all this hypothetical nonsense, it's understandable something like this won't be implemented. By no means is it a bad idea but it is a commitment. Long term plans have huge payoffs though. Saying that, a great way I think a W-L record can also be utilized is showing the record the competing wrestlers have against each other. Definitely an easy way to develop a story for a throwaway match. The commentators can ask if the wrestler with more losses can finally make things even or if the wrestler with more wins can maintain their dominance. These statistics should be used as a launching point for storytelling. Often they're used as a way to put certain wrestlers on a pedastol. To me using statistics to do such a things can be effective but after a certain point also comes out to be a wash. It's the same as asking the question of who is richer: Bruce Wayne or Tony Stark after enough comas does it matter? These are not stats with any substance. Whatever the writer wants is the answer making the stat frankly inflated. A great example is the concept of the Grand Slam Champion. Sounds great. Grand Slam is an amazing thing to get in baseball but wrestling it means winning four titles. Not just any four title um just specific ones. Whichever ones that is changes every 6 months since titles get thrown away or just lose their prestige I guess. In baseball, a grandslam does not change so at least the prestige is kept.

Treating wrestling like a real sport is silly. The stats should be a tool, to continue a program, not make it comparable to other professional leagues. Oh yeah! Michael Jordan has 6 NBA Championships, well Ric Flair is a 16 time World Champion. It's cockamamie! The times Flair won the titles is the same as the number of times he lost it unlike Jordan, who never lost Championships. He could only earn them. The quick quantitative stat speaks nothing as to the reigns themselves. It always has bothered me. My idea for breaking wrestling into seasons is just a means of making the standing many promotions want to have purpose. There's many other different means of utilizing the seasons too like when to have drafts or times wrestlers can have breaks without a demeaning explanation to the fans. Hope you enjoyed this hypothetical approach of giving wrestling a means to make a rankings matter without strapping down creative control. Could a seasons model be sustainable? Does win loss record attached to wrestler take away the fun or give it another layer?

Playlist 5 - Not going to save you

Link for an autoplaylist is at the bottom. Also I wrote another vague story using the title tracks to fulfill the words. Hope it works for you. These playlist have been mostly compiled of songs that hit me right. Think next I'm going to do a themed one of either EDM song or Epic tracks. What are your suggestions.

Story Time

There comes a time when she has to declare 'enough is enough.'  For the longest time the heroine has been A Little Bit Off.  'Why?' She ponders.  She walks in her home, the only place she has of solitude in the world, where it's her obligation to constantly be involved. No space for personal reflection. Here it is though until she Blind By The Lights as she approaches the kitchen. There is a feminine figure sitting at her island. When the heroine's eye adjust to the Blinding Lights, she realizes who is waiting.  The heroine, now regulated displays, a scolding demeanor that cast No Love to the gal, who has broken in the heroine's home.

Mystery Gal, 'You need to Fly Again, immediately'

Heroine, 'I'm not going to save you'

Mystery Gal, 'I don't want you to Rescue Me' as she slams her fist against the marble counter. Heroine almost fearing it would crack. Heroine turns around and grabs a dark exquisite looking glass from her highest cabinet. She pours what is more apparent as liquor in two glasses. Picks one up and offers it to her invader.

Mystery Gal 'Save That Shit! You need to quit this pity game and listen to me. Without Me you wouldn't be the one everyone admire and love. I come here with a personal request and you can't give the time nor the mind to listen'

Heroine, 'So what? I'm Forever Yours? You have a History of Violence and your missions have nothing to do with aiding the greater mankind.'

Mystery Gal 'You keep Rocking the Boat and I ensure you are put in A Place, Where You Belong'

Heroine 'Not if I do it first' The Heroine tosses her beverage in the Gal's face. Heroine jumps across the counter knocking the gal to the floor. The Gal screams from the substance burning her eyeballs. Heroine notices a purse below the stool the Mystery Gal was sitting on. The contents within the purse were glowing.

Mystery Gal 'This isn't the time. You need to go!  It's your family.'  Heroine stands up offering her hand to the Mystery Gal. Heroine shows no scars beside her long dirty blonde hair being misplaced in every direction.

Heroine 'I may have overreacted. Last time I help, it did not end well.  I only created more secrets to protect you. That's not my goal presently. I didn't want to be trapped being a mercenary part time...Let Me Be Your Superhero instead!

Gal looks up to Heroine with a expression filled with relief. As she begins motioning her body in a way to move closer to take Heroine's hand, Gal exclaimed, 'I'm glad you can see the Light. It's your sister, she fou...'

Mystery Gal abruptly stop as she leaped on her ground to open it. Heroine knew she was reaching for the glowing substance within her purse. Heroine didn't even think this time unlike past encounters. She swiftly moved her boot to stomp the Mystery Gal into her tile floor smashing it. Heroine did not know what she did and what the repercussions could be. Did she just condemn her sister or save humanity..

Playlist 4 - Not letting go!

Story Time:

My Demons are Still Breathing. They are The Passenger that drives my path. After I ate the Black Honey my world became poison. I wanted to join the Riders on the Storm, not become the storm. Can't there be a way to Take It Away? I suppose not. I never wanted the World In My Hands, anyway. I wanted to forge my own path but not be the one to give the answers or even guidance. I only ask that those following continue Moving On. The more I see your eyes filled with hope, the more I realize you're Never Gonna Stop fighting. How do you that? Don't You Need SomeBody to Erase the Pain? Have you not eaten the Black Honey. We all have! This Calling is all of ours to take and none must pretend they have not heard it.

* The story is pure fiction and somewhat a reflection of how HP LoveCraft writes his stories. Just having fun with the track names.

My 2020 Oscar's ballot

My 2020 Oscars Vote

It's pretty incredible that after seeing 100+ movies from 2019, there are movies and performances that have been nominated that I have still yet to see. I did go out of my way to see the best picture nomination when making my 'Top 13 movies of 2019” list. So basically I'll be pretending this would be my ballot. Trying to guess what the Hollywood elite would choose would not be fun. It's likely I can figure out who would win by adding up whose won the other awards but again not very fun.

Best Picture

George MacKay as Schofield in "1917," the new epic from Oscar®-winning filmmaker Sam Mendes.

1917
Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris, Jayne-Ann Tenggren and Callum McDougall, Producers

The competition was really tough this with almost most type of drama being covered except horror. I am fascinated at how much Midsommar is being ignored this year. Alright, no write ins. All around 1917 captured everything that is fascinating about films. I knew I had to see this in the theaters and I'm plenty happy that I did. One needed the full aspects of sounds, visuals, and adventure to capture what this movie has to express. This movie goes out of the way to make one need to go to the theater. It is not my intent to claim that an epic action movie tops a strong drama like Marriage Story or Once Upon a Time in Hollywood but Sam Mendes covers the media well. The dreary battle scenes and production design feel dirty, disgusting, tragic, and authentic. The story was simple but strong and had me connected all the way through.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

My Choice: Joaquin Phoenix – Joker

Joaquin's performance is definitely what made the movie standout. The story was great but Phoenix expressed an individual who felt authentic. There was some embelishing on the actions one with mental disabilities but this was a movie portraying an extreme situation. I felt that the Joker was expressing a few false narratives but there are folks, who truly thought his expressions were accurately showing how the mentally disabled need to be cared for. It speaks to how well Phoenix performed as a madman yet was able to come off as an individual most felt like they could relate to.

Adam Driver was a close 2nd. Honestly seeing his performance made me mad in a good way. He wasn't really a good person in some aspects but I felt his pain how he came to making certain mistakes. He never came over the top in either direction...maybe desperate but despite the plot it's not surprising. I think it speaks to an actor more when they're able to go the mile in a simpler roll than one that's meant to be unique. Saying that I still choose Joker as he undoubtedly conquered that expressions mannerism of one who is trapped in a dire situation mentally and physically.

NOMINEES
ANTONIO BANDERAS
Pain and Glory
LEONARDO DICAPRIO
Once upon a Time...in Hollywood
ADAM DRIVER
Marriage Story
JOAQUIN PHOENIX
Joker
JONATHAN PRYCE
The Two Popes
ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

My Choice: Joe Pesci – The Irishman

An actor known for his boisterous presentations, definitely took it down a notch for The Irishman. Pesci proved in this movie his strength in his flexibility. I barely even recognized him when I first started watching the film. Pesci never had to yell the take over the room like he used to. The way delivered his dialogue always meant business. He showed restraint in a means, I'm not sure most actors who have served as tough guys in the pasts. At the same time, I found that I had to lend my ears to each word as they would hold a strong message either metaphorically or change the who demeanor of the film.

Hopkins and Hanks are two I had a difficult time battle in my brain to be my choice also. Hopkins presented a pope, who was charming and enticing, while all of his goals seemed to say otherwise. It's not quite a contradiction but more of an expression of depth another may not have given us. Hanks did great too. I had my hesitations over the Mr Rogers biopic since I loved the documentary so much. Hanks was not doing an impression but transformed into Rogers. There was no need for over the top makeup like some actors get so they look like the individual they're portraying. I just straight believed Hanks was Rogers. Reason I will put Pesci over these two grand performances is that Pesci had me leaning rather than nodding to all of their delivery. Not quite a concrete distinction but I feel it's fitting. Badaboom.

Quite confused how Christian Bale was snubbed for Ford v Ferrari. Kind of feeling Matt Damon ruined everything. Folks feel like he can act so if Damon didn't get nominated than how could Bale. Bale always transforms for his positions physically and emotionally.

NOMINEES
TOM HANKS
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
ANTHONY HOPKINS
The Two Popes
AL PACINO
The Irishman
JOE PESCI
The Irishman
BRAD PITT
Once upon a Time...in Hollywood

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE

My choice: Scarlett Johansson

Very similar reason as to why I enjoyed Adam Driver's performance. I really appreciate how all over Johansson is in the movie world. Rather it be in twisted indie movies like Under the Skin or a ninja super hero like Black Widow. Scarlett expressed an individual who was desperate but confident in what she possessed even if it's not something to be proud of. She showed the audience as a role model to women and others who are dealing with similar affairs.

The other roles I tossled with in my brain was Cynthia Erivo's Harriet. I truly believe she was Harriet, who historically was a badass. Cynthia showed the restraint though not to go Django in her god guided journey. I appreciated how Cynthia was okay showing that Harriet didn't have to be charismatic to make a difference. Her big lines were only limited to “I must do this” to “Put your hands up” Makes it very difficutl to compare to Scarlett's performance who was allowed and gave a fantastic range of emotions.

NOMINEES
CYNTHIA ERIVO

SCARLETT JOHANSSON
Marriage Story
SAOIRSE RONAN
Little Women
CHARLIZE THERON
Bombshell
RENÉE ZELLWEGER

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

My Choice: Kathy Bates – Richard Jewel

This was an incredibly tough choice as all these nominees gave such solid performances. Dern played up the 'caring' yet conniving lawyer, Johansson was a charming caring mother(not quite as standout as her Marriage Story performance), Pugh was an inspiration figure who wouldn't allow her trails and tribulations of family & others hinder her. Sadly I didn't see Robbie's performance in Bombshell, which I'm sure would've gave me a bigger struggle. Bates revealed, in a somewhat corny movie, a subdued mother figure, who had no idea how to help her son. She was consistently good through the film the speech at the end when she's speaking to the President at public conference is what sold it to me. She came off as loving, desperate, and sincere. In a film where everyone came off as somewhat cartoonish, she was certainly the most grounded. Kathy always gives a solid performance and I wouldn't mind if she won more gold tonight.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

My Choice – I Lost My Body

I just this and wish I saw it earlier. It's odd how this animated category works with all these kiddie movies and then something super existential as in I lost My Body. Really too bad that 'Ruben Brandt: Collector' was snubbed. I Lost My Body was an excellent movie that covered life and new experiences on a new front. It covered something that would look silly in a live action movie. Exactly what an animated movie should covered. It also covered a romance story that could've very well been done live action but Clapin & Pontavice did not skip a beat in covering the subject matter. This is on Netflix and I encourage all to check it out. Not for children and nor does it have to be just cause it's animated. My favorite piece of the film was how the main characters hand existed and went about it's journey to rediscover their body. Even though it was simply a hand, I recognized all it's expressions that felt familiar even though it was just a hand.

Missing Link had amazing claymation and the story wasn't bad but nothing to take home. Toy Story 4 should not be on this list. It felt like a basic episode for the Toy Story show but nothing that would enough to be a movie. Basically the same thing we got the previous movies; toys like to be played with and are sad when they're not. They idea of a spork being a toy was cute though.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

My Choice – The Lighthouse

Just loved the great contrast in how each scene was put together. Even though some of it was difficult to tell what was real and wasn't, the visuals of mermaids, tentacle, and lighting were fascinating. This movie was a pleasure to watch in black and white thanks to the cinematography. Even though the nightmare fuel was off putting as to what was actually happening in the film, I looked forward to it. Always beside the odd imagery of sea monster, a lot of the movie is DaFoe and Pattinson sitting in a room together and arguing. The way the characters and objects were framed created the disturbing emotions even before the characters deliver their dialogue. I wasn't the biggest fan of the movie's plot but I did appreciate the care put in the environment and unease the cinematography gave to its viewers.

My Choice: Little Women – Jacqueline Durran
Hate even making a choice for a category like this but Jacqueline Durran was impressive as to what she put together. Not only was this a period piece but a lot of the characters designed their own clothes depending on their economic status or their prowess. No details were left alone. A lot of the nominations are period pieces but nothing felt as thorough and massive as the costumes setup for Little Women.

DIRECTING

My Choice: Irishman – Martin Scorsese
This was an incredibly tough decision to make between Tarantino, Joon Ho, and Scorsese. Many saw The Irishman as a retirement home reunion, while Scorsese can conquer the film media even if they're in adult diapers or not. Martin makes it look so easy despite the pacing of this film. Martin gave a structure that even with three hours make the audiences craving more information. A lot of the movie the actors were only sitting and delivering dialogue but the way Scorsese had it structure, audience wanted to know each word expressed. It shows experience when a director can make the simplest situation seem so bold. He had a vision and seen it through while other films didn't feel so intentions and even lost at times.
